UAE vaping guide
What is really inside your bottle of e-liquid
Vaping is now a normal part of life across the UAE, from the vape lounges tucked behind Al Rigga in Deira to the specialist shops lining Sheikh Zayed Road and the small counters in Al Nahda. Since e-cigarettes and nicotine products were formally regulated in 2019, only e-liquids that meet UAE.S 5030-1 standards can be sold legally. That framework is useful, but it does not tell you how to pick a bottle that actually suits you. This guide breaks down the ingredients, the difference between freebase and salt nicotine, how to pick a strength, and how to store the liquid so it keeps tasting the way it should.
Ingredients
The four things every e-liquid contains
Whether you buy from a shop in Dubai Marina or a kiosk in Sharjah’s Al Majaz, every bottle of electronic liquid is built from the same four ingredients. The ratios change, the flavourings change, but the base recipe is always the same.
- Vegetable Glycerine (VG). A thick, slightly sweet liquid derived from plant oils. It produces the visible vapour cloud and softens the throat feel.
- Propylene Glycol (PG). A thinner liquid that carries flavour more efficiently and delivers the sharp “throat hit” that ex-smokers usually look for.
- Nicotine. Optional, and available in different strengths and chemical forms. This is what makes vaping a nicotine replacement rather than just flavoured steam.
- Food-grade flavourings. The same category of concentrates used in confectionery and beverages, blended to create everything from mango ice to Arabic coffee.
A typical bottle sold in the UAE is either 50/50 VG/PG for pod devices, or 70/30 VG/PG for sub-ohm tanks that produce bigger clouds. According to the World Health Organizationboth VG and PG are widely used in food and pharmaceutical products, though the long-term inhalation effects continue to be studied.

Freebase nicotine vs nicotine salts
The word “nicotine” on a UAE label can mean two very different things. Freebase nicotine is the traditional form, the same chemistry used in older e-cigarettes and in cigarettes themselves. It hits the throat hard, works well at lower strengths (usually 3 mg or 6 mg), and pairs naturally with high-VG liquids and sub-ohm tanks. If you see big clouds coming out of a mod in a Business Bay vape lounge, that is almost always freebase.
Nicotine salt, or e salt liquidis a newer formulation where nicotine is bonded with an organic acid, usually benzoic acid. The result is smoother on the throat even at very high strengths, absorbs faster into the bloodstream, and is designed for small pod devices rather than big mods. Salt nicotine is why 20 mg and 50 mg pods can feel comfortable to inhale, something that would be brutal in freebase form.
How nicotine strength shapes the experience
Low: 3 to 6 mg
Suited to social vapers or people who used to smoke light cigarettes. Best in sub-ohm setups with high VG. Very mild throat hit.
Medium: 10 to 20 mg
The sweet spot for most ex-smokers in the UAE. Usually salt-based, used in refillable pods like the Caliburn, Vinci, or Argus.
High: 30 to 50 mg
For heavy smokers switching from a pack a day or more. Only in salt form. Common in disposables sold across UAE convenience stores.
Choosing
Picking the right strength
A useful rule of thumb: match your old smoking habit rather than guessing. Someone finishing half a pack of light cigarettes a day is usually comfortable at 10 mg salt. Someone on 20 a day of full-flavour tends to land at 20 mg salt. If you cough, the strength is too high or the device is too powerful for the liquid. If you find yourself chain-vaping and still not satisfied, the strength is too low.
Device matters too. A high-wattage sub-ohm tank paired with 20 mg salt will overwhelm your throat and waste liquid. Keep salts in low-power pods, keep freebase in bigger tanks.

Flavour categories worth knowing
UAE shops usually organise their walls by category. Once you know the categories, you can walk into any shop, in Karama, Yas Mall or Al Wahda, and describe what you want in seconds.
- Fruit. The biggest category by far. Mango, watermelon, grape, lychee, mixed berry, often with a menthol “ice” version. Popular year-round because they cut through the Gulf heat.
- Mint and menthol. Clean, cold, and forgiving. A safe starter flavour and a common palate cleanser between other juices.
- Dessert. Custard, cheesecake, kunafa-inspired blends, vanilla, caramel. Richer, sweeter, and better in the evening.
- Beverage. Coffee, karak, cola, energy drink, iced tea. Regional labels do particularly good Arabic coffee and karak profiles.
- Tobacco. Ranges from dry Virginia leaf to sweetened RY4 and shisha-style blends. The natural landing place for former cigarette smokers who dislike sweet flavours.
Storage and shelf life in a UAE climate
Heat is the enemy of every e-liquid, and the UAE gives it plenty. A bottle left on a car dashboard in Abu Dhabi in August can degrade in a single afternoon. The flavour goes flat, the colour darkens, and the nicotine oxidises to a peppery, harsh taste.
- Keep it cool and dark. A drawer, a cupboard, or a wardrobe shelf at room temperature. Avoid windows and car interiors.
- Seal it tight. Air is the second enemy. Cap bottles firmly after every refill.
- Use glass or high-grade PET. Cheap plastic can leach into the liquid over long periods.
- Rotate stock. Buy what you will finish in one to three months rather than stockpiling.
- Steep dessert and tobacco flavours. A week or two in a dark cupboard actually improves complex blends.
Most sealed e-liquids carry a shelf life of around two years from the manufacturing date, printed on the bottle. Once opened, aim to finish within six to twelve months for peak flavour. According to guidance from the U.S. FDAnicotine and flavour compounds degrade with light, heat and oxygen exposure over time, which is exactly what the UAE climate accelerates.
The short version
Pick a VG/PG ratio that matches your device, choose salt for pods and freebase for bigger tanks, dial the strength to your old smoking habit, stick to reputable UAE-compliant brands, and keep the bottle out of the sun. Do that, and the rest is just picking a flavour you enjoy.
Frequently asked questions
What is nicotine salt?
Nicotine salt is nicotine bonded with an organic acid, usually benzoic acid, to make it smoother to inhale. Unlike freebase nicotine, it can be used at high strengths such as 20 mg or 50 mg without harshness, and it absorbs into the bloodstream faster.
It is designed for low-power pod devices, not sub-ohm tanks. That is why almost every refillable pod and disposable sold in the UAE uses salt nicotine.
How long does e-liquid last?
Sealed and stored in a cool, dark place, a bottle of e-liquid typically stays at peak quality for around two years from the manufacturing date printed on the label.
Once you open the bottle, aim to use it within six to twelve months. After that, the flavour flattens and the nicotine can start to oxidise, giving a peppery taste.
Can e-liquid expire?
Yes. E-liquid does not spoil in the food-safety sense, but the flavour compounds break down and the nicotine oxidises with time, heat, light and air. You will notice the liquid turn darker and the taste become sharper or muddled.
In the UAE climate, expiry is accelerated. Storing bottles in the fridge or at least away from direct sunlight helps a lot.
Which nicotine strength should I choose?
Match your previous smoking habit rather than guessing. Light smokers usually land at 6 to 10 mg salt, average pack-a-day smokers at 20 mg salt, and heavy smokers at 30 to 50 mg salt. Cloud-chasers using sub-ohm mods should stick to 3 mg or 6 mg freebase.
If you cough on the first few puffs, the strength or device power is too high. If you keep vaping without satisfaction, it is too low. Adjust in small steps.
Are e-liquids regulated in the UAE?
Yes. Since 2019 the UAE has permitted the sale of e-cigarettes and e-liquids only when they meet the UAE.S 5030 standard set by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology. Nicotine content is capped and labelling requirements are strict.
Buying from a licensed local retailer is the simplest way to make sure the bottle you are holding meets those rules.
What is the difference between 50/50 and 70/30 e-liquid?
The numbers refer to the VG/PG ratio. A 50/50 liquid is balanced, carries flavour crisply, produces modest vapour and gives a firm throat hit. It suits small pod devices and mouth-to-lung inhaling.
A 70/30 liquid is higher in VG, thicker, smoother on the throat and produces bigger clouds. It is designed for sub-ohm tanks and direct-to-lung inhaling, and almost always uses freebase nicotine at lower strengths.
